The RESOLVE Network is soliciting applications from qualified candidates based in CameroonChad, and Nigeria for a project-based research fellowship in support of a comparative country case study on the rise of violent extremism and the politics of religion in education in the Lake Chad Basin region. Supported by the RESOLVE Network Secretariat in Washington, D.C., the project will be led by a select team of principal investigators with experience in the region who will work closely with fellows in the program to conduct field based research over the course of 10 months from early November 2017 through late September 2018.

RESOLVE Fellowship Application Instructions

RESOLVE Fellowship applications contain the following five sections, each of which is explained in detail in the remainder of this application form:

1. Personal Information

4. Personal Statement
5. Short Analytical Essay
6. Letters of Recommendation (2)

Please read and complete the entire application form.

Your saved PDF application form and a separate PDF copy of your most recent Curriculum Vitae/Resume containing all of the information detailed in Section 3 of the form must be submitted by email to with the following subject line: [Applicant Last name, Applicant First Name]-RESOLVE Network [Intended Project Country] Fellow Application-2018.

Only complete applications submitted by the deadline will be considered.

RESOLVE 2018 Fellowship Application Form

Please use the attached application form to fill out the following sections.

1. Personal Information

  • Full Name

2. Proof of Citizenship in the Region/Country of Focus

  • Please insert a scanned copy of your official passport and/or national identification card in the form provided.

3. Curriculum Vitae/Resume

  • Please attach a separate PDF of your most recent CV/Resume. Your CV/Resume should not exceed 5 single-spaced pages. Please use 12-point Times New Roman font and include the following information:
    • Education:
      • Starting with the most recent, list all education above the secondary school level, including relevant training and professional courses. For each entry, indicate the following:
        • Institution Name
        • Location
        • Dates Attended
        • Degrees Awarded
        • Field of Specialization
    • Professional/Occupational Experience:
    • Starting with the most recent, list all major jobs held. For each entry, indicate the following:
      • Job Title and/or Description
      • Employers
      • Locations
      • Start and End Dates
      •  Honors:
        • List any fellowships, grants, and professional honors or awards received. Include dates for each entry.
        • Major Publications:
          • Using full bibliographical references, list only major publications that you have authored or edited. The list may include online publications in reputable outlets. Provide English translations for all foreign titles.

4. Personal Statement

  • In 800 words maximum, using 12-point Times New Roman font, tell us what unique professional qualifications and personal experiences would make you successful in this fellowship. Describe your career plans and how would this fellowship opportunity with the RESOLVE Network will contribute to your professional goals as a research leader.

5. Short Analytical Essay

  • In 800 – 1,000 words maximum, using 12-point Times New Roman font, write an analysis of a current issue or theme relevant to international policy responses to the threat of violent extremism, political violence and conflict. Explain how research and evidence-based analysis could make a substantive contribution to improving current practices and programs aimed at preventing violent extremism. Your essay may include, for instance, a thoughtful critique of specific policies or practices, or an examination of current trends in a specific country or region facing challenges from destabilizing political violence and violent social movements. Your essay should demonstrate a knowledge of international current affairs and how rule of law, governance, political institutions, and security intersect with socio-economic factors such as religion, gender, education, and social mobility to shape the political economy of conflict.

6. Letters of Recommendation

  • Please provide letters from at least two recommenders who have knowledge of your educational, professional, and/or research experience and can speak to your leadership potential. Recommenders should not be related to you (e.g. familial ties) and should have direct and recent knowledge of your qualifications, activities, and character.
  • These letters must include your recommender’s email and telephone number and be submitted by the recommender directly on the applicant’s behalf by the application deadline.
  • Recommenders should email their letters to with the subject line, [Applicant Last name, Applicant First Name]-RESOLVE Network [Intended Project Country] Fellow Reference-2018.
  • The applicant is responsible for making sure all of their recommenders submit their letters according to these directions and on time. Please do not write to RESOLVE Network staff to ask about your letters or to ask staff to contact your recommenders on your behalf. Paper or hard copy letters of recommendation will not be accepted.
