The July Webometric ranking of world universities has rated Nigeria’s premier university, the University of Ibadan, as the best in the country. However, this is not good news from the global perspective because the university was ranked 1073rd in the world.
The University of Nigeria Nsukka came second among Nigerian universities and 2180th. Obafemi Awolowo University was third best Nigerian university and 2223rd in the world; Covenant University came fourth in Nigeria and 2,244th globally, while Ahmadu Bello University was fifth in Nigeria and 2,638th globally.
The universities that made up the top 10 Nigeria universities list are the University of Lagos, University of Ilorin, University of Port Harcourt, Federal University of Technology Minna, and Federal University of Technology Akure.
The University of Cape Town, which ranked 280th in the world was best in Africa followed by University of Witwatersrand, Stellenbosch University, University of Pretoria and University of Kwazulu Natal all in South Africa.
Other universities in Africa’s top 10 are Cairo University, University of Johannesburg, University of Nairobi, University of the Western Cape, and North West University.
Globally, eight out of the top 10 universities in the July Webometric ranking of world universities are in the United States of America while two are in the United Kingdom.
Harvard University came first; Stanford University second; Massachusetts Institute of Technology third; University of California Berkeley fourth; University of Michigan fifth; and University of Washington sixth.
UK’s best university, University of Oxford came seventh in the world. Cornell University came eighth; Columbia University New York came ninth. The University of Cambridge was ranked 10th best university in the world.
Webometrics is the largest academic ranking of Higher Education Institutions, which has ranked universities every six months since 2004.
According to information on its website, an independent, objective, free, open scientific exercise is performed by the Cybermetrics Lab (Spanish National Research Council, CSIC) for the providing reliable, multidimensional, updated and useful information about the performance of universities from all over the world based on their web presence and impact.
